Get these to avoid the "stink" of off brand media!

Posted by Randy Glass on Apr 2nd 2017

A few years ago I bought replacement media for my Mastercool evaporative cooler. I got them at chain hardware mega-store “Depot.” From the beginning they smelled terrible, and even after rinsing them off multiple times on my roof with a hose they still turned the water in my cooler yellow in the pan and they put an odor in the house for a week or two when we started using them. These "Kuul" pads are a different story. I put them into the cooler dry from the shipping box and then ran the pump for a while. With the exception of a few scraps of the paper media that landed in the water, the water stayed clear and clean. There was no odor other than one of wet paper, and that was not unpleasant at all. The water stayed perfectly clear with no discoloration. After the pads ran wet (without the fan motor running) I removed the overflow tube allowing the pan to empty, then allowed the cooler to refill. Even that was superflous, but that was all that was needed to get these pads ready for the next few summers! One note. There is a groove in the bottom of the media that runs the width of the media when the sections are aligned properly. This groove is designed to fit over the “hump” of the media support tray on the side closest to the blower. This keeps the media from shifting and aligns it with the water distributor assembly.
